But (unpopular opinion), there's something about Vegas that makes it a little unsettling for me. I know they wanted a different feel than the regular series since it's an alternate universe, but the scenes like this have almost an offputting, oily finish to it. Yes, weird, I know...
No, I know exactly what you mean. Both John and Rodney are harder, darker versions of themselves that we see in canon. Colder. It gives everything an edge.

Okay, I think I might finally get - and appreciate - Vegas more now. I always understood that Vegas wasn't "our" Universe, and those weren't our Rodney and John. But by doing the alteration in how they filmed Vegas - literally harder, darker, and slightly unsettling, it really proved that fact.
And now that I've realized this, I may need to go re-watch Vegas again. :)
They do a great job making you feel it instead of just telling us (for once). I do enjoy Vegas, but only if it means John and Rodney stay together and soften each other up. Or be a battle couple - asshole to everyone but each other kind of thing.
See, I wasn't used to this with SGA. Music? Yes, like the stylized version of Taps when John is talking to the camera about losing his commander in "Letters from Pegasus". But subtle lighting choices weren't done all that much - at least not that I noticed. Then again, I can be a little slow about things sometimes. :)
I love Vegas. I feel like in it J and R are how they could have become without Atlantis and each other. John's life going nowhere but down and Rodney not finding his humanity but becoming ice cold instead.
YES. I agree, that's exactly how it feels. Which is why I refuse to believe anything but John being saved from the desert and joins the program, and they make each other happy ♥
I think they'd definitely fall into a sexual relationship faster. But the emotional side...I think these two are even worse with positive feelings. Maybe recognizing them, but expressing them...
